Concepts and Significance
As AI becomes an integral part of our daily lives, the need for ethical values such as fairness, transparency, and accountability to be embedded from the design stage is increasingly emphasized. In other words, ethical principles should be applied throughout the development and use of AI, from design and planning to implementation, deployment, and operation, thereby preventing or minimizing potential harm that AI could bring in the short and long term.
The Role of Critical Thinking in Ethical AI Development and Usage
We need to develop our critical thinking in order to understand how AI impacts our society in the near and far future and to make better decisions. This means that we need to continually ask questions from various perspectives, such as:
Does the AI system benefit a specific organization without considering its impact on
society, including individuals and the environment?
Is the developer of the AI system fully aware of potential risks and ethical issues that
might arise, and is the information properly disclosed and dealt with?
Through critical thinking, we can turn ‘Ethics by Design’ into actionable plans and
guidelines.
